What parents need to know

Certain above-ground pools that are 48 inches or taller from Bestway, Intex, and Polygroup have been recalled. The compression strap located around the outside of the pool legs can create a foothold, which may allow a child to climb into the pool. This presents a drowning hazard. Children can still gain access to the pools using these footholds even if the ladder is removed.

CPSC believes that nine children between the ages of 22 months and 3 years old have drowned after gaining access to the pools via the footholds, in incidents that occurred between 2007 and 2022. CPSC is also aware of three other incidents, in 2011 and 2012, involving children who had previously used the compression strap to get into the pool.

If you own one of these pools, you should immediately take steps to ensure that children cannot access the pool while it is unattended. Alternatively, you may drain the pool until a repair can be completed. Please consult the official recall notice to determine if your specific product is included.

To address this hazard, you should contact the manufacturer to request a repair kit. Follow the instructions provided by the company to ensure the remedy is installed correctly.
