What parents need to know
Gardeners Basics is recalling Waltham 29 Broccoli Sprouting Seeds, sold in one-pound resealable pouches, because the seeds may be contaminated with Salmonella. The bulk seed lot used for this product was recalled by the supplier after Salmonella was detected in a sample analyzed by the FDA, and the seeds were also identified as being used by a sprout grower whose finished product was part of an FDA investigation into a multistate foodborne illness outbreak.
Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy people infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare cases, the infection can spread into the bloodstream and cause more severe illness, including infected aneurysms, endocarditis and arthritis. No illnesses related to this product had been reported to Gardeners Basics as of the date noted in the official recall notice.
Parents who have these seeds should stop using them and should not eat the seeds or any sprouts grown from them. Seal the recalled seeds and any sprouts in a bag and discard them; no return is required. If you believe you have an affected bag, or are unsure whether your bag is affected, contact Gardeners Basics for recall assistance or a refund, using the contact details given in the official recall notice, and be ready to provide your order number and where you purchased the product.
