Find the perfect diaper size for your baby based on their weight.
Signs It's Time to Size Up
- •Red marks on your baby's waist or thighs
- •Frequent leaks or blowouts
- •Difficulty fastening the diaper tabs
- •The diaper doesn't fully cover baby's bottom
- •You're constantly adjusting the diaper
- •Baby seems uncomfortable or fussy during diaper changes
How to Choose the Right Diaper Size
Diaper sizes are based on your baby's weight, not their age. Two babies the same age can wear different sizes, so the number on the package is the reliable guide. When your baby's weight sits near the top of a size's range — or you start seeing leaks and red marks — it's time to size up.
Diaper Size Chart by Weight
The major US brands — Pampers and Huggies — publish the same weight ranges for each size. Sizes 5, 6 and 7 are open-ended (“and up”); the upper figures below are practical guides for when most parents move to the next size.
Worked Example
Say your baby weighs 17 lbs (7.7 kg):
- 17 lbs falls in Size 2 (12–18 lbs) and overlaps the start of Size 3 (16–28 lbs)
- At 17 lbs you are near the top of Size 2, so it still fits but you'll likely move up soon
- If you are getting leaks or the tabs pull tight, switch to Size 3 now — it has plenty of room to grow
This overlap between sizes is normal and intentional — it gives you a window to transition rather than a hard cut-off.
Signs It's Time to Size Up
- Red marks on your baby's thighs or waist after a change
- Frequent leaks or blowouts, especially overnight
- Difficulty fastening the tabs, or tabs reaching the very edge
- The diaper no longer fully covers your baby's bottom
- Your baby's weight is at or above the top of the current range
Do Pampers and Huggies Fit Differently?
Their published weight ranges are identical, but the cut and shape differ. Many parents find Pampers runs a touch slimmer and Huggies a little roomier through the legs and waist. If one brand leaks or marks your baby's skin at the “correct” weight, trying the same size in another brand often solves it — no need to change sizes.
How Many Diapers Will I Use?
Newborns go through the most — about 8–12 a day — dropping to roughly 5–7 by the first birthday and 4–6 as a toddler. Over the first year that adds up to 2,000–2,500 diapers, which is worth planning for in your baby budget.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size diaper does my baby need?
Diaper sizes go by weight, not age. As a guide: Newborn fits up to 10 lbs, Size 1 is 8–14 lbs, Size 2 is 12–18 lbs, Size 3 is 16–28 lbs, Size 4 is 22–37 lbs, Size 5 is 27+ lbs, and Size 6 is 35+ lbs. Enter your baby's weight above for a specific recommendation.
How do I know if a diaper is the right size?
Two fingers should fit between the diaper and your baby's belly. The leg cuffs should be pulled out, not tucked in, and the waistband should sit just below the belly button without leaving red marks.
When should I size up diapers?
Size up if you see red marks on the thighs or waist, have trouble fastening the tabs, get frequent leaks (especially overnight), or your baby's weight reaches the top of the current size's range.
Are Pampers and Huggies sizes the same?
Yes — both brands publish the same weight ranges for each size, so a Size 3 covers 16–28 lbs in either brand. The difference is in cut and shape: many parents find Pampers slightly slimmer and Huggies a bit roomier. If one leaks at the right weight, try the same size in the other brand.
What diaper size is best for a newborn?
Most full-term newborns start in Newborn (up to 10 lbs), though babies over about 9 lbs may move quickly into Size 1 (8–14 lbs). Babies born premature or under 6 lbs may need Preemie diapers first.
How many diapers does a baby use per day?
Newborns use about 8–12 diapers a day, dropping to roughly 5–7 by the first birthday and 4–6 as a toddler. That works out to around 2,000–2,500 diapers in the first year.

Methodology and Sources
Weight ranges are verified against the published US size charts for Pampers and Huggies. Both brands use the same weight bands, so this calculator applies one verified chart and personalises the label and fit guidance by brand. Daily-use figures are typical averages and vary from baby to baby.
Note: This calculator provides general recommendations based on weight. Every baby is unique, and you may need to adjust for your baby's body shape, leg size, and comfort.
